SONIA CALICO
Taipei
her debut album simulation of an overloaded world (more time records, 2020) was named one of mixmag's best albums of the year, praised for "expertly fusing styles, eras, and geography," while bandcamp daily highlighted its "freewheeling spirit and refreshing lack of cultural triangulation." the album was also recognized by dj mag, nowness, and others, and its single iridescent vision won taiwan's golden indie music award for best electronic music.
in 2024, she returned to more time records with the acclaimed four-track ep moonlight, which explores frenzied states under moonlight through south african, kuduro, and baile funk-inspired rhythms, reinterpreted with east and southeast asian elements. the record was once again nominated at the 2025 golden indie music awards and has been widely supported by djs across international dancefloors.
beyond her releases, sonia calico is the director of glowball festival (founded 2024), taiwan's pioneering platform merging electronic music, cross-disciplinary art, and gender-diverse culture. known for its bold and eclectic curation, striking visual identity, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, glowball has quickly become a vital space for international and local communities to converge, expanding taiwan's role within the global club & queer culture network.
her continuous innovation, cross-disciplinary collaborations with drag performers, dance troupes, and visual artists, and dedication to building community have not only enhanced the diversity of electronic music but also injected new vitality and vision into taiwan's music culture. sonia calico is set to bring more surprises and achievements to audiences worldwide."This mix collects tracks that have accompanied different phases of my musical path — from early electronic influences like Peaches and Ladytron, to the UK bass that marked the moment I first began producing club music, to Afro & Latino-rooted rhythms I've been exploring in recent years — along with a self-made edit of Mandopop.
I originally considered arranging the mix by era, but since I still wanted it to function as a dance mix, I followed tempo instead to maintain physical flow. Fitting these references into just one hour was a challenge — the differences in sound quality and energy were too wide, and I could only select those that fit more naturally into the flow, even though the selection still spans across a wide range of styles.
It was a rare chance to look back at different moments of my past through music, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to do so through this mix."
